Ingredients
8 cups finely chopped green cabbage
1/2 cup finely grated carrots
2 tablespoons finely minced yellow onion
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/3 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup whole milk
1/4 cup buttermilk
2 1/2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar
1 tablespoon fresh lemon juice
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
1. Remove the outer leaves and core from the cabbage, then finely chop the cabbage into very small pieces for an authentic texture.
2. Peel and finely grate the carrots, then add them to a large mixing bowl with the cabbage.
3. Finely mince the yellow onion and mix it into the vegetable mixture.
4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the mayonnaise, sugar, milk, buttermilk, apple cider vinegar, lemon juice, salt, and black pepper until completely smooth.
5. Pour the dressing over the cabbage mixture and gently toss until all the vegetables are evenly coated.
6. Cover the bowl and refrigerate the coleslaw for at least 2 hours to allow the flavors to blend together.
7. Stir the coleslaw before serving and adjust seasoning if needed.
8. Serve chilled alongside fried chicken, barbecue, burgers, sandwiches, or picnic favorites.
Notes
Finely chopping the cabbage is the secret to achieving the classic restaurant-style texture.
Letting the coleslaw chill overnight creates even better flavor and texture.
Stir the coleslaw before serving because the dressing settles slightly during refrigeration.
