Ingredients
- 3–4 large sweet onions (Vidalia), sliced into 1/2-inch rings
- 2 cups shredded cheese (mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or cheddar blend)
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 tsp garlic powder
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1/2 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Fresh thyme or parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Peel and slice the onions into 1/2-inch thick rings. Separate them gently.
- In a small bowl, mix melted butter with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
- Toss the onion slices in the seasoned butter mixture until fully coated.
- Lightly grease a 9×13 baking dish. Layer the onions evenly in the dish.
- Sprinkle half the shredded cheese over the onions.
- Add another layer of onions if needed and top with remaining cheese.
- Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
- Remove foil and bake uncovered for 15–20 minutes until the cheese is golden and bubbling.
- Let rest 5–10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.
