Tennessee Onions are a Southern-inspired, cheesy baked side dish that turns sweet onions into an indulgent treat. With tender layers, golden melted cheese, and a rich butter-seasoned base, this dish offers the ultimate comfort with minimal ingredients. Whether served alongside grilled meats, holiday roasts, or a vegetarian entrée, it adds a savory-sweet punch that elevates any meal.

Ingredients

  • 34 large sweet onions (Vidalia), sliced into 1/2-inch rings
  • 2 cups shredded cheese (mozzarella, Monterey Jack, or cheddar blend)
  • 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • Fresh thyme or parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Peel and slice the onions into 1/2-inch thick rings. Separate them gently.
  3. In a small bowl, mix melted butter with garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  4. Toss the onion slices in the seasoned butter mixture until fully coated.
  5. Lightly grease a 9×13 baking dish. Layer the onions evenly in the dish.
  6. Sprinkle half the shredded cheese over the onions.
  7. Add another layer of onions if needed and top with remaining cheese.
  8. Cover with foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  9. Remove foil and bake uncovered for 15–20 minutes until the cheese is golden and bubbling.
  10. Let rest 5–10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh herbs if desired.
