With a golden biscuit topping and melty cheddar cheese, it’s a comforting classic you’ll want to make again and again.

Ingredients

1 lb ground beef

1 small yellow onion diced

2 cloves garlic minced

1 tbsp ketchup

1 tbsp yellow mustard

1 tsp Worcestershire sauce

Salt and black pepper to taste

1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 tsp baking powder

0.25 tsp baking soda

0.5 tsp salt

0.75 cup buttermilk

2 tbsp unsalted butter melted

Extra shredded cheddar cheese

Diced pickles

Sesame seeds

Chopped fresh parsley or chives

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C).

2. In an oven-safe skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned, about 6–8 minutes.

3. Add diced onion and minced garlic. Cook for another 2–3 minutes until softened.

4. Stir in ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix well and remove from heat.

5. Sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the beef mixture.

6. In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

7. Add buttermilk and melted butter. Stir gently until combined — do not overmix.

8. Pour the biscuit topping over the beef and spread gently to the edges.

9. Top with more cheese or sesame seeds if desired.

10. Bake for 20–25 minutes or until the topping is golden and cooked through.

11. Let rest for 5 minutes before slicing. Garnish with pickles or herbs if desired.

12. Serve warm and enjoy!

Notes

You can make your own buttermilk by mixing ¾ cup of milk with 2 tsp of lemon juice or vinegar — let sit for 5 minutes.

For extra flavor, mix in chopped pickles, jalapeños, or cooked bacon before topping.

To keep the crust soft during reheating, cover with foil and bake at 350°F for 10–15 minutes.
