6 cups peeled and sliced apples

1/2 cup granulated sugar

1/4 cup brown sugar

2 tablespoons all-purpose flour

1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

1/8 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 tablespoon lemon juice

3/4 cup all-purpose flour

3/4 cup rolled oats

1/2 cup brown sugar

1/4 cup granulated sugar

1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Pinch salt

1/2 cup cold unsalted butter, cubed

Instructions

1. Peel, core, and slice apples. Combine in a bowl with both sugars, flour, spices, salt, vanilla, and lemon juice.

2. Lightly grease a Dutch oven and transfer the apple mixture into it. Spread evenly.

3. In a separate bowl, mix flour, oats, sugars, cinnamon, and salt. Add butter and cut into the mixture until crumbly.

4. Sprinkle oat topping evenly over the apples.

5. Bake at 350°F. Cover for 20 minutes, then uncover and bake 25–30 minutes until the topping is golden and filling bubbles.

6. Let cool for 10–15 minutes before serving.

Notes

Use firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for best texture.

Keep your butter cold for a crumbly topping, not cakey.

Add chopped nuts to the topping for extra crunch and flavor.
