Soft, pillowy, and topped with a swirl of creamy buttercream, these Lofthouse Frosted Sugar Cookies are the homemade version of the nostalgic grocery store favorite. Perfect for holidays, birthdays, or anytime you want a sweet, colorful treat.


Ingredients

  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup sour cream
  • 1 tablespoon vanilla extract

For the Frosting:

  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons milk
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Sprinkles (for decorating)

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  2. In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add egg, sour cream, and vanilla; beat until smooth.
  4. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet, mixing just until combined.
  5. Cover and chill dough for at least 1 hour.
  6. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  7. Scoop 1.5-inch balls of dough and place on baking sheet. Flatten slightly.
  8. Bake 9–11 minutes, until edges are just set. Do not overbake.
  9. Cool completely on wire racks.
  10. For frosting, beat butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar, vanilla, and milk. Beat until fluffy. Add food coloring if desired.
  11. Frost cooled cookies and top with sprinkles.
