Ingredients

1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

1 cup light brown sugar, packed

1 large egg, room temperature

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup all-purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon baking powder

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (plus extra for topping)

1/4 cup chopped walnuts or pecans (optional)

1/4 cup shredded coconut (optional)

Flaky sea salt for topping (optional)

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line an 8×8 or 9×9-inch baking pan with parchment paper and lightly grease the sides.

2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together melted butter and brown sugar until smooth.

3. Add egg and vanilla extract, whisking until fully blended.

4. Sprinkle in flour, baking powder, and salt. Fold gently with a spatula until just combined.

5. Stir in chocolate chips (reserve some for topping), and any optional add-ins.

6. Spread batter evenly into prepared pan and top with reserved chocolate chips.

7. Bake for 22–28 minutes, until golden on top and slightly soft in the center.

8. Cool in the pan for at least 20 minutes, lift out, then slice into bars once fully cooled.

Notes

Brown your butter for a deeper, nuttier flavor boost.

Don’t overbake—slightly soft centers ensure chewy, moist bars.

Press extra chocolate chips on top before baking for a bakery-style finish.
