Ingredients
4 large sweet potatoes peeled and cut into 1/2-inch thick rounds
1 cup packed light brown sugar
1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
1/4 cup water
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon vanilla extract (optional)
Pinch ground ginger or cloves (optional)
Instructions
1. Peel the sweet potatoes and slice them into uniform 1/2-inch thick rounds. Set aside.
2. In a small saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in brown sugar, water, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and optional vanilla. Mix until smooth and syrupy.
3. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease a 9×13-inch baking dish and arrange the sweet potato slices slightly overlapping.
4. Pour the warm glaze evenly over the sweet potatoes, ensuring all slices are coated.
5. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 40 minutes to tenderize the sweet potatoes.
6. Remove foil and continue baking for another 20–25 minutes, until the glaze thickens and caramelizes around the edges.
7. Let rest for 5–10 minutes before serving. Spoon glaze over the top when serving.
Notes
Use uniformly thick sweet potato slices for even cooking.
Add a splash of orange juice for a citrusy twist to the glaze.
Make ahead and reheat gently in the oven before serving.
