Ingredients

1 cup cornmeal

1 cup all-purpose flour

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon sugar

1 large egg

3/4 cup milk

6 hot dogs, cut into 1 to 1.5-inch pieces

Oil for frying (about 3 cups)

Instructions

1. Cut hot dogs into 1 to 1.5-inch pieces and pat them dry.

2. In a large bowl, whisk cornmeal, flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar.

3. In another bowl, beat the egg and milk together, then stir into the dry mix until smooth.

4. Heat oil in a heavy pot to 350°F (175°C).

5. Skewer a hot dog piece, dip into the batter to coat fully.

6. Fry 4–5 at a time until golden, about 2–3 minutes.

7. Transfer to paper towels to drain.

8. Repeat with remaining hot dogs.

9. Serve warm with dipping sauces.

Notes

Use a thermometer to keep the oil temperature steady at 350°F for consistent crispiness.

Lightly flour the hot dog pieces before dipping for better batter adhesion.

Don’t overcrowd the pot while frying to prevent sogginess.
