Ingredients

1 cup unsalted butter

1 1/2 cups granulated sugar

2 large eggs

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons cream of tartar

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 tablespoon ground cinnamon

1/4 cup red sanding sugar

1/4 cup green sanding sugar

Instructions

1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.

3. Add eggs one at a time, mixing well, then stir in the vanilla extract.

4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cream of tartar, baking soda, and salt.

5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients until just combined.

6. Chill the dough in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.

7. In three bowls, mix cinnamon sugar, red sanding sugar, and green sanding sugar.

8. Roll tablespoon-sized balls of dough and coat them in your choice of sugar.

9. Place dough balls on prepared baking sheets, spacing them 2 inches apart.

10. Bake for 9–11 minutes until the edges are set but centers are soft.

11. Cool for 5 minutes on the pan, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

Don’t skip the chill time—it prevents cookies from spreading too much.

Use a cookie scoop for evenly sized cookies that bake consistently.

Store with a slice of bread to keep cookies soft longer.
