Ingredients
1 sheet puff pastry (thawed but still cold)
1/2 pound ground sausage
3/4 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
1/4 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
1 large egg (beaten, for egg wash)
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional)
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
1. Unfold the thawed puff pastry on a lightly floured surface and let it rest until pliable but still cold.
2. In a skillet over medium heat, brown the sausage until fully cooked. Drain excess fat, season with salt and pepper, and let it cool.
3. Evenly spread the sausage over the puff pastry, leaving a small border. Sprinkle both cheeses evenly over the sausage.
4. Tightly roll the pastry from one long edge into a log. Seal the edge with a bit of egg wash.
5. Place the roll seam-side down on a baking sheet and chill in the freezer for 15–20 minutes.
6. Preheat oven to 400°F (200°C). Slice the chilled roll into 1/2 to 3/4-inch pinwheels.
7. Arrange slices on a parchment-lined baking sheet, spacing 1 inch apart.
8. Brush tops with egg wash and bake for 18–22 minutes or until golden brown and puffed.
9. Garnish with chopped parsley and serve warm.
Notes
Always chill the rolled pastry before slicing to help maintain shape and structure during baking.
Don’t overfill with cheese or sausage — less is more for clean rolls and even baking.
Reheat leftovers in the oven, not the microwave, to keep the pastry crispy.
