Ingredients

1.5 to 2 pounds stew meat, trimmed and cut into chunks

1 tablespoon soy sauce

1 tablespoon cornstarch

1 teaspoon sesame oil

1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper

1/2 cup low-sodium soy sauce

1/4 cup beef broth

2 tablespoons oyster sauce

2 tablespoons brown sugar

1 tablespoon hoisin sauce

4 garlic cloves, minced

1 tablespoon fresh grated ginger

1 tablespoon cornstarch

2 tablespoons cold water

2 tablespoons vegetable oil

3 cups broccoli florets

Cooked white rice or noodles, optional for serving

Sesame seeds, optional for garnish

Chopped green onions, optional for garnish

Instructions

1. Combine stew meat with 1 tablespoon soy sauce, 1 tablespoon cornstarch, sesame oil, and pepper. Mix and marinate for 20–30 minutes.

2. Heat oil in a Dutch oven and sear the beef in batches until browned. Set aside.

3. In a bowl, whisk soy sauce, beef broth, oyster sauce, hoisin, sugar, garlic, and ginger.

4. Return beef to the pot, add the sauce, and simmer covered on low for 60–90 minutes until tender.

5. Add broccoli florets and cook covered for 5–7 minutes until just tender.

6. Mix cornstarch and cold water into a slurry. Stir it in and let the sauce thicken.

7. Serve over rice or noodles. Garnish with sesame seeds and green onions if desired.

Notes

Always sear the beef in batches to lock in flavor and avoid overcrowding.

Add the broccoli only in the final minutes to keep its vibrant texture and color.

A splash of sesame oil before serving adds a warm, nutty aroma.
